Driving in Costa Rica can be a challenge to the newcomer. Until travelers get used to the roads and local driving habits, it is best to avoid driving at night, especially in the country side roads. We highly recommend you never leave anything of value in the car (even if it’s in the trunk and the car is locked) and always drive defensively. Hazards include pedestrians, animals on the road, huge potholes, pavement that suddenly ends, unlit vehicles, sudden fog in mountain areas, torrential rains and careless drivers.
A major credit card (Visa, Master Card or Amex) or cash deposit for the deductible is required. All cars carry the “Collision Damage Waver” for collision or damage.
UNAVOIDABLE. In Costa Rica, the deductible deposits range between $750.00 and $2,000.00 depending on the type of vehicle. There is no rental car company that does not apply the deductible when a client rents a vehicle. The amount is applied to your credit card and credited back when your return the car in good conditions.
Conditions to rent a car:
Minimum driving age: 21 years old
Valid credit card for deposit
Valid Passport or tourist card
Valid Driver’s license
Vehicles are limited to Costa Rican territory.
C.D.W. insurance mandatory
Tips for driving in Costa Rica:
If you are an adventurer, we suggest a 4×4 vehicle.
Keep your car locked all the times, even while you drive.
Try not to leave your car unattended, if you have any values inside your car.
Do not give the car keys to any stranger (Valet Parking).
Before you go on a trip, find your way on the road map supplied by the car rental company or get a GPS, at an additional cost.
Drive defensibly, not offensively
